Best PractiseAcute Injury - Whiplash:Its scary enough going through a car accident, but coping with a chest pain after can be a minefield. Whiplash is the term given to “Spine Strain” and applies to the whole spine. Our vertebrae are coated in small ligaments and each level has up to 6 small joints, each with its own capsule and cartilage – no bigger than a small finger nail. During an accident the head, neck and back can be thrown violently forward then back, tearing tissue causing tiny bleeding and bruises deep in the spine. Sometimes the pain and stiffness does not come on for a few days or even weeks, and although often it is only one or two of the tiny joints that get affected, sometimes it’s the whole lot! Treatment: See a Physio! ICE or heat for 1st 24-48 hours REST for 24-48 hours only. Support – neck collar for a few days only. Then: Start gentle movement short of pain
Acute injuries are managed very differently from chronic scarred areas. So manual treatment and massage should help symptoms – not exacerbate. You will also be guided on gently getting back to normal activity. It can take up to 3 months for full recovery. “So be patient with yourself!” Studio Scene· 1: 1Tuition · Classes maximum of 3 · Individual program Richard has just finished his creditation course with the USA Polestar Naster Instructor. Journal ReviewTendinitis “now officially does not exist” (unless you’ve just had an injury?) – it has been proven that in conditions such as Achilles Tendinitis and Tennis Elbow – those aches and pains that niggle on and on – have no signs in the tissue of inflamatory cells or chemicals. What does that mean? No point in taking anti-inflamatories or having ultra sound. Research has shown the pain and swelling is a sign that the tendon is breaking down and the body has a ‘failed healing response’. Its now called “Tendinopathy” and needs to be treated with specific “eccentric”exercise, a biomechanical approach to treatment. This will reverse the breakdown, strengthen the tendon tissue and facilitate repair. Thanks to Jill Cook a Research Physio from La Trobe University in Melborne, who came over and told us all about i DON’T FORGET YOUR FEET! Muscles in the big toe activate the whole chain: Ankle – knee – hip – pelvis when you walk, Helping to absorb shock and more with ease. So when you have a minute activate your toes by pressing them into the floor and spreading them wide. They are so far away from the brain they are often forgotten!! THOUGHT WAVE Aim at “Exuberant vitality in every thing you do”. So said Ralph Waldo Emerson who coined The phrase “Give me health and a day and I will make the power of emperors ridiculous”. Talking of which:- “The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire”. Let that fire be positive, peaceful and loving sending out like a laser beam to those who make war in Iraq. Remember: Health should not simply be strong but invincible. So perfect that nothing better can be imagined and nothing worse can touch it.
