CLINICAL PILATES: A gift of extreme grace and balance ¨ Created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, traditionally used by Dancers and Actors ¨ Now extending successfully to people with problem spines and non-healing injuries ¨ Can be graduated for any level of fitness and disability ¨ Incorporated by many top athletes and sportsmen/women into their training. ¨ Merges the science and art of movement, recognising that the body and mind are integral to the formation of the whole being ¨ Exercises are taught 1:1 with specific verbalisation and tactile feedback on mats and a range of specially designed equipment – ‘Cadillac’ ‘Reformer’ and ‘Multichair’ add resistance through springs – challenging the limbs while the trunk is supported ¨ Full concentration and control of breathing patterns/diaphragm are the focus for optimal energy transference ¨ Deep trunk muscles are controlled and isolated in a core cylinder as limbs perform co-ordinated, flowing motion with precision and grace. ¨ Through motor control reprogramming spinal segments learn to articulate and integrate with shoulder girdle, pelvis, upper and lower limbs. ¨ Weight bearing and spinal axial elongation with correct body alignment ensure the body can cope with the demands of functional daily activity. ¨ A prerequisite to starting any training fitness program and essential to maintaining peak performance Time to wake up and say hello to your body!
